Ans: An operating system is a software program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer.

b. Write some features of the operating system.

Ans: Some features of the operating system are:

1. It controls all the hardware components and software programs of the computer.

2. It manages the computer's memory like primary and secondary.

3. It provides an interface between the user and the machine.

4. It provides an environment for software applications to function.

5. It displays the structure/directories for the data management.

6. It manages and coordinates with the various input, output and storage devices.

c. Write down the functions of the operating system.

Ans: Some functions of the operating system are:

d. What are the File and Directory?

Ans: A file is an object that stores data, information, settings, or commands that are used with a computer program. 

A directory or folder is a virtual location where programs, files, and other folders are stored. 

e. What is Windows? When was the first version of windows released?

Ans: Windows is the most popular operating system software developed by Microsoft Corporation USA. 

The first version of windows was released in 1985 AD. 

f.What is the Desktop? Name any six icons available on the desktop.

Ans: Desktop is the first windows screen that you get after starting your computer. Some icons available on the desktop are: Computer, Network, user, Recycle bin, Document, Control panel etc. 

g. How do we shut down the computer? Write with steps.

Ans: Steps to shut down the computer are:

Step 1. Save all the documents and close all the programs.

Step 2. Click on the start button.

Step 3. Select Turn off the computer

Now the computer will automatically shut down after this switch off the monitor and main power supply. 

h. Write down the steps to create a folder on the desktop.

Ans: Steps to create a folder on the desktop are:

Step 1: Right-click on the blank area of the desktop.

Step 2 : Click on New and select folder from the list.

Step 3. A new folder will appear on the desktop and give the name of the folder.
