Class 7 | Chapter 3 | Types of computer

Types of Computer
Q.6. Write very short answer of the following questions.
a) Which computer can perform the single dedicated task?
Ans: Analog Computer can perform the single dedicated task.
b) Which computer can perform the function of both analog and digital device?
Ans: Hybrid Computer can perform the function of both analog and digital device.
c) Which company introduced the first minicomputer in 1960?
Ans: Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) introduced the first minicomputer in 1960.
d) Is laptop, mainframe computer?
Ans: No, laptop is not mainframe computer.
e) Which computer can be used where there is no regular electricity?
Ans: Laptop computer can be used where there is no regular electricity.
f) In which type of computer parallel processing is possible?
Ans: Parallel processing is possible in Super Computer.
g) What is micro computer?
Ans: Micro computer, also known as Personal Computer is a small computer with a microprocessor as its central processing unit (CPU).
h) Write the example of mainframe and minicomputer?
Ans: IBM S/3909 is the example of mainframe and PDP-11 is the example of minicomputer.

Q.7. Write short answer of the following questions:
a) What is the difference between general purpose computer and special purpose computer?
Ans:
Difference between general purpose computers and special purpose computers are given below:
General Purpose Computer
Special Purpose Computer
General purpose computers are designed to perform more than one task.
Special purpose computers are designed to perform single task.
Different Programs can be installed according to the users need like games, drawing, word processor programs etc.
Programs are loaded during the manufacturing time and user cannot change or add programs.
Example : Personal computer, Laptops, Notebooks etc
Example : Washing machine, self driven car, Telephone billing system etc.

b) Why is an analog computer called special purpose computer?
Ans: Analog computer solve problems by using continuously changing data and continuously data are obtained by measuring so it can only perform single task. Programs are also loaded during the manufacturing time so these computer are also known as special purpose computer.
c) Why are digital computers more popular these days?
Ans: Digital computer solve problems by using discrete data. Discrete data are obtain by counting so it produce more accurate value than analog computer. It is also designed to perform more than one task so digital computers are more popular these days.
d) How is hybrid computer used in hospitals?
Ans: Hybrid computer process both continuous and discrete data it means it can perform the works done by analog computer as well as digital computer because of this features Hybrid computer are used in hospitals.
e) Mention the types of micro computer.
Ans: Micro computer are divided into three types:
i) Desktop computer
ii) Laptop computer
iii) Handheld computer
f) Distinguish between desktop computer and laptop computer.
Ans: Different between desktop computer and laptop computer:
Desktop Computer
Laptop Computer
1. It is bigger in size and designed to be fitted on desk.
1. It is smaller in size and fitted inside a briefcase.
2. Desktop needs basic external devices like mouse, keyboard, monitor etc to be fully functional
2. Laptop has all necessary devices built-in, making it the most portable.
3. Desktop computer can only run off the main powers.
3. Laptop computer can run off AC power, batteries, or mains power.
g) What are handheld computers? Write its types.
Ans: Handheld computer is an electronic computing device which is compact and portable enough to be held and used in one or both hands. It is also known as palmtop computer.
Types of handheld computers are:
i) Personal Digital Assistance (PDA)
ii) Cellular Phone
iii) H/Pc Pro device
h) What is a mini computer? Write the use of mini computers.
Ans: Mini computers are more powerful, larger in size, have higher processing speed and expensive than microcomputers. These computer are used as server in network and also used in business, education and many other field. PDP-11 is the example of mini computer.
i) What is a mainframe computer? Where is it mainly used?
Ans: Mainframe computers are more powerful, larger in size, have higher processing speed and expensive than minicomputers. It also required a large room with air conditioner because it produce more heat. It is mainly used as servers on the World Wide Web. It is also used in large organization like Banks, Aeroplanes, Universities etc. IBM S/3909, CDC 6600 are the example of Mainframe computer.
j) What are the applications of super computer? Write any four of them.
Ans: Super computer are the most powerful and largest computer with highest processing speed. It is also most expensive computer which can solve complicated scientific problems. It has large number of processors connected parallel so parallel processing is possible in this computer.
Application field of super computer are:
a) Weather forecasting
b) Online banking
c) Nuclear energy research
d) Aircraft design
e) Control industrial units.
k) Prepare a chart to show the classification of digital computer.
